Automatic Electric Co (GTE) was a major manufacturer of telephones and central office equipment and systems. Their engineering, quality and innovation was tops in the industry. AE supplied most all dial telephones to the US NAVY. Large ships were equipped with dial telephones and a central office like a city.
STROWGER on the dial refers to Dr Strowger, an undertaker and inventor during the late 1800, who learned that operators were referring customers to his competition  He invented the famous step switch which made dialing practical and very successful. It revolutionized the industry. The Automatic Electric Co acquired the rights and produced the first and  most acceptable dialing system.
I owned the premier telephone restoration co "Chicago Old Telephone Co" for over 45 years. My staff of engineers, craftsmen & technicians referred to this telephone as the most demanding and tedious to restore.
After selling the company I found they were correct. This telephone requires over 30 hours to disassemble,
polish 50 solid brass parts fasteners, and frame to a mirror finish, reassemble, wire & test.
I send care, installation and operating instructions with telephone.
Your friends, guests and family will be most impressed with this amazing telephone. Few people have ever seen one especially in this restored condition. This is a historical item as it was on a warship for many years, traveled thousands of miles and survived battles.
