    Description

STUNNING LARGE 6 INCH DIAMETER MUSEUM COPY OF A C.700 BC ANTIQUITY
A superbly executed "museum copy" of an ancient Greek oil lamp from c. 700 BCE (signed by the artist at rear: Christiana Geometrii).
The Greek reads "ΙΩΝ ΑΘΕΝΕΘΕΝ ΑΘΛΟΝ" (SEE PICS)
Ion was the reputed founder of the Ionian people, who mainly lived on what is now the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Their language and Attic, the language spoken in Athens, are considered close versions of the same Ancient Greek dialect, differing mainly in spelling only.
The middle word, Athenethen, meant literally "from Athena", and the third word, Athlon, meant a "prize in a contest".
The strange object between Ion on the left and the amphora vase on the right may be a tripod, though only two legs are showing. Tripods were frequent prizes in contests at the time.
EXPLANATORY WRITING ON THE BOTTOM, AS CAN BE SEEN IN THE PIC OF THE BOTTOM, AND THERE IS ALSO A LEAD SEAL ATTACHED WHICH READS "MADE IN GREECE".
HARD TO KNOW THE DATE OF THE COPY'S EXECUTION, PERHAPS 1950'S TO 1970'S.
THE FLAKES AND CHIPS SEEN IN THE PAINT ARE DELIBERATE TO REPRESENT THE APPEARANCE OF THE ORIGINAL, THERE ARE NO ACTUAL CHIPS OR OTHER APPARENT FLAWS ON THE COPY.
