REPLACEMENT/REPRODUCTION WET CELL BATTERY CIRCA. 1900

Description

The unit for sale is a reproduction
of a wet cell battery of the LeClanche design produced in the late 1800s by several manufacturers primarily for telegraph and local battery telephone usage.  Manufacturers included National Carbon Co. (NCC, later Columbia), Edison, Western Electric, Electric Gas Lighting (E.G.L., later Samson), and others.  Wet cells of this configuration were probably produced after 1900.  The label is a reproduction verbatim copy of an NCC label from that period.
The unit is configured to produce 1.5V each with two C-Cell battery holders (wired in parallel) due to the limiting height of the glass jar.  The original tops were formed in wax.  This top is metal, covered with epoxy.  Jar dimensions are 5-1/2"H, 4"W, 4"D, (overall height 7-1/4") and therefore compatible with battery boxes on most two box and three box telephones produced in the late 1800s.
The C-Cell compartment is water-proof (
if Jar is not over-filled
), so the Sal-Ammoniac solution could be simulated using water.
