Description:
Presented for your consideration is this very rare and very interesting cover for a candlestick telephone. Traditionally referred to as a Hide-A-Phone, this is one of two designs offered to cover up candlestick telephones during the late 1910s through the 1920s. This is the harder to find and more uncommon design. These covers were designed to cover the gaudy looking candlestick telephones of the era to give a more sophisticated, elegant look to the home. It is cast in plaster and hand painted. It was sculpted by L.C. Mayer and copyright dated 1917. The cover is in the shape of a lady head with two cherubs resting at the back of her head. On one side of the base it is marked with "Euphoria" and on another side of the base it is marked with "Lily C. Mayer." Back side of the base is marked with "Copyright by Lily C Mayer Sept. 1917." Beautiful detailing is present throughout. The case is hinged to allow access to the phone. The candlestick phone simply sits inside on the tabletop and the cover closes around it with the wire feeding through the notch on the side of the cover. Included with the cover is a candlestick telephone complete with the receiver. Patent dates are marked on the back of the phone as well as the top of the receiver. There are no markings on the telephone to indicate a manufacturer. This very hard to find candlestick telephone cover would make an excellent addition to any phone memorabilia collection! A very unique and neat piece!
There is a small chip on one of the cherub's feet. Along one side of her hair there are small surface chips. Some crazing and paint wear is present. Telephone has some light age and use wear. A small crack is in the stem of the telephone. Overall both pieces are in VERY GOOD condition. Please refer to the photos for the absolute best details.
Cover when closed measures 8 1/2" wide, 8 1/2" deep and 13 3/4" tall.
