Description
This rare 1920s era telephone is mounted in a nicely crafted oak case with dovetailed joints, metal corner brackets with feet, a brass clasp, and a leather handle on top.The door on the front hinges open to reveal the Bakelite handset with a push-to-talk button labeled "press".
The cloth-covered cord attached to the handset is in very good condition and there are 2 posts on top of the case to connect to the telephone circuit.
A wiring schematic is mounted inside the door and lettering is hand-stamped into the wood "R. Pennington" and "Sinelens".
The case is as sturdy as the day it was built but it has numerous minor dings and the finish has darkened with age.
A manufacturer's plate on the door reads "Standard Telephone and Cables Limited, London" which was a subsidiary of the U.S. company International Telephone & Telegraph at the time.
This nice antique phone is untested though it appears complete except that the crank handle is missing.
It measures 12"wide by 12-1/4" tall by 7" deep.
