    Description

This is a beautiful, wide, quality, hand-beaded / chaquira bracelet made in Mexico.  It has rich colors of blue, red, copper, black and white.  Indian / southwest pattern.  When fastened, it measures 7 1/4" around.  It is 2" wide.
The Huichols of Mexico primarily make chaquira jewelry. The estimation is that only 8,000 Huichol Indians remain. The Huichols have been struggling to maintain their traditional culture, art, and religion in a world which has unsuccessfully tried to integrate them into Mexican life. They live in the remote Sierra Madre Mountains of North Central Mexico. Their beadwork and yarn art are famous because of the laborious work put into each piece and, in the case of their beadwork on wood, the hand-set into beeswax. The patterns often symbolize deep spiritual meaning to the Huichols including their use of peyote to obtain spiritual enlightenment. The sale of their art helps sustain their way of life.
