Huichol Beaded Prayer Bowl Sun Butterfly Sea Shell Handmade Mexican Folk ArtBeautiful, multi-colored glass beaded, abalone shell
Shaman prayer bowl. Prayer bowls are placed in shrines and sacred sites and used by the Shaman during their ceremonies. In the Huichol Indian culture, the Shaman are spiritual leaders who communicate with the gods, lead ceremonies, recite divine passages, heal the sick and are thought to have supernatural powers to help the Huichol people. Huichol Mexican Indian folk art is truly unique and all handmade by the indigenous Indian people of the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico.
Using the traditional Huichol techniques of pressing Campeche wax onto the inside of this abalone shell and adding glass beads, one-by-one, this prayer bowl, or Tazon de Oracion, depicts the offering message to the Huichol Gods. The gorgeous smooth resin coated exterior allows the fabulous colors to shine on the outside of the bowl.
Using varying colors of red, orange, black and black pearl colored Chaquira glass beads the symbols are added as offerings to the Huichol Gods.
Huichol prayer bowls are thought to bring power and strength to those who hold it.
The Father Sun who brings power and light to the world, is master of the heavens and brings abundant crops, shines his light on the symbols and Prayer Arrows make up his sun rays.
The butterfly is amazing! He (or she) has a deer's head for ultimate messages, two God's Eyes on his body for protection of the children, gray pearl Peyote flowers in his wings and is masculine with strength in graduated red colors.
A small orange and red scorpion protects the Peyote on the underside edge of the bowl and the Aztec step fret around the top of the bowl symbolizes movement and the waves of the ocean.
Gray pearl and black beads add real sparkle to the background.
