Huichol Mexican Indian folk art is truly unique and all handmade by the indigenous Huichol people of the Sierra Madre mountains in Jalisco, Mexico.
This owl, or buho, figurine is gorgeous and 100% Mexican Huichol folk art.  The spirit owl is thought to bring wisdom, freedom and knowledge.  The owl is the strong night eagle and the messenger of change and transition.  With her (or his) wings over her mouth, the owl reminds us to use our ears and eyes to observe and get wisdom.

Using the traditional Huichol techniques of pressing Campeche wax onto this resin/fish bone sculpture and adding, one-by-one, Chaquira glass beads this owl depicts the offering message to the Huichol Gods.
This owl sculpture was created by one of our favorite, most detailed and unique Huichol artists.  Librado Carrillo Carrillo, Paritemay, uses Huichol symbols and colors in new ways.  Some of his figurines are strong and sometimes delicate and he is always very detailed.
Traditionally, the Huichol relied on symbols and colors for their language. The symbols and colors on this owl are mostly red, orange, black and metallic gold.  (Fire for warmth, cooking and strength.  Orange the sacred grounds.  Yellow the all knowing Father Sun).   On the front, her all seeing eyes are made of black and platinum pearl colors.  On her wings and around her body, Peyote cactus star flowers are ablaze with orange and yellow.  On her back, a large Father sun (master of the heavens) in yellow, orange and red brings powerful light to the world.
Librado's use of clear metallic gold beads in the background adds sparkle and brilliance and we love how he turns some of these beads sideways for radiance.
