Huichol Mexican Indian folk art is truly unique and all handmade by the indigenous people of the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico.
This is the most AMAZING, BREATHTAKING Huichol sculpture.  We have seen alot of Huichol figurines, but this is a fine art piece of Huichol artwork.  Every part of it is 3D.  Handmade by the talented Mexican Huichol Indian artist, Librado Carrillo Carrillo, Paritemay, in Mexico.  Librado's designs have that
haute couture
elegance.  This sculpture is

Using the traditional Huichol techniques of pressing Campeche wax onto this resin sculpture and adding, one-by-one, glass beads this Our Lady of Talpa depicts the offering message.
Talpa de Allende, originally inhabited by the Nahua people, was founded by the Spanish conquistador Guzman in the 1530's and grew because of the rich mineral resources.  In 1599, the tiny town was recognized by the Guadalajara authorities and Father Manuel de San Martin arrived to give the town a small statue of the Virgin of the Rosary.  The statue was made by a local artisan out of corn paste and the people built a small chapel for her.  When the Spaniards left the town,
the chapel and
the town fell into disrepair as did many of the church artifacts.  45 years later, a new Father arrived to rebuild the chapel and ordered that all of the relics be returned.  An indigenous woman, Maria Tenache, took the task of sending the Virgin of the Rosary to be fixed since it was so old and made of only corn paste.
As the story was told, when Maria picked up the figure a flash of light came from the Virgin; so powerful it knocked her over and the room was filled with warm, bright light and angels near the ceiling.  The figure had transformed into a beautiful wooden statue.  The Father and other men came to examine the transformation.  One man said that the statue's face and hands looked like human flesh and to test it he took a candle to her right cheek.  The burn mark is still there today and the moment was known as El Milagro de la Renovacon.  Later, the arch bishop ordered a replica be made and it travels from town to town for those that cannot visit the original statue in Talpa.
Isaias created a beautiful piece of art to honor Talpa's La Chaparrita, the little short one, or Our Lady of the Rosary that stands in their church today.
On her head is a HUGE metallic gold and bronze beaded halo with white pearl and black accents.  Six Messenger Deers, the communicators with the Gods, make the shape of a peyote flower on the back.
Her large mantle is made of turquoise and clear green gold beads on the front and blue with clear green bronze beads on the back with shaped plum and pink pearl flowers garnishing the sides.  Swirls of white pearl waves are set in clear gold beads to finish the bottom of her cloak.  Her sleeves and the child's gown are all silver pearl beads set in clear gold beads.  We love her silver pearl rosary necklace and how she is grasping a white pearl cross.  In the middle, a 3D clear red wine color heart seems to beat above a large gold corn stalk that is set in AB bronze beads.
The Virgin's face and child's face is hand painted and the painted burn mark is prominent on her right cheek.  They both have gorgeous black and AB bronze hair and are wearing turquoise with clear green bronze beaded crowns.
An enormous 3D crescent moon is wrapped in silver pearl and platinum pearl beads with one single white bead for his eye.  The serpent, God of the ocean, and the scorpion, protector of the peyote, guard the large peyote flower on the moon.
The pedestal is made of metallic gold and clear bronze beads and the base is red and black.  All rich with symbols.  Even the underside of her mantle is beaded in graduated golds and bronze colors.
We love this Huichol artist's delicate attention to detail in symbols.  He has applied the beaded symbols in the folds of her mantle that really creates definition.  This is an incredible piece of Huichol art!
