Description
These handmade brass cups were made as souvenirs for tourists to Greece in the 1960s, they are replicas of a pair of 3400 year old gold cups found in theVapheio tholos tomb in Lakonia,
Greece
in the late nineteenth century.
These cups are considered to be masterpieces of Ancient Greek metalworking.
The cups are decorated with scenes showing 2 methods of capturing bulls, the Peaceful, and the Violent.
The smaller Peaceful cup is believed to have been made in Minoa, the larger Violent cup was most likely made in Mycenea.
The smaller cup measures 2 5/8" tall, the larger one, 3 3/8" tall. The imagery on these cups are quite faithful to that of the originals, a line drawing of the original imagery is the last photo of this listing.
These replica cups were made by local craftsmen and sold to visitors to Greece in the 1960s as an expression of national pride for these world class examples of ancient art of their
culture.
